This light, usually shaped like an oil can with a drip, means oil pressure has dropped too low to protect the engine. Without pressure, moving metal parts lose their oil film, and serious damage can follow quickly.

Pull over safely and switch the engine off.
Wait a few minutes for the oil to drain back, then check the dipstick.
If it is low, top up to the full mark with the correct grade.
If the level is fine, or the light comes back, do not drive. Arrange a tow.

Oil level warning: check and top up

Some cars have a separate, usually amber, low oil level warning. It is less urgent than the red pressure light but still means checking the dipstick and adding oil before driving far. If you only have a quart of a different oil, see can you mix engine oil.

Oil life monitor: plan the change

An oil life percentage, a wrench symbol, or a service due message is a maintenance schedule. It estimates when the oil is due based on how you drive, so stop-and-go city driving and short trips bring it down faster. Book an oil change when it gets low, and reset the monitor afterwards.

Low or old oil and the check engine light

Engines with oil-driven variable valve timing can set camshaft timing codes, such as P0011, when the oil is low or overdue. That is a check engine light, not the oil pressure light, but the first thing to check is the same: the dipstick.
