The Most Common Check Engine Light Causes

1. Loose or damaged gas cap

The fuel system is sealed to trap vapour. A cap that is not clicked tight, or has a cracked seal, lets it escape and sets an evaporative leak code such as P0455 (large leak) or P0442 (small leak). Check this first. It costs nothing to rule out.

2. Oxygen sensor

Oxygen sensors measure how much fuel is being burned and tell the computer how to adjust the mixture. As they age they slow down or their internal heater fails, which sets codes like P0135 and P0141. The car usually drives fine, but fuel economy suffers.

3. Misfires: spark plugs and ignition coils

Worn spark plugs and failing ignition coils are the classic cause of a misfire, which sets P0300 for random misfires or P0301 through P0304 for a specific cylinder. A misfire you can feel as shaking deserves prompt attention, and a flashing light means stop. See solid vs flashing.

4. Mass air flow sensor

The mass air flow sensor measures air entering the engine. Dirt or oil on its sensing element makes it read wrong, which can set P0101 and cause hesitation or rough idle. A dirty engine air filter is a common contributor.

5. Vacuum leak or lean mixture

A cracked intake hose or leaking gasket lets unmeasured air in, making the mixture lean. That sets P0171 or P0174. The opposite problem, too much fuel, sets P0172.

6. Thermostat stuck open

If the engine takes too long to reach operating temperature, the computer sets P0128. The usual cause is a thermostat stuck open. Expect weak cabin heat and lower fuel economy. Check your coolant type and capacity if you replace it.

7. Catalytic converter efficiency

P0420 means the converter is not cleaning the exhaust as it should. Converters rarely fail on their own. They are usually damaged by an earlier misfire or oil burning, so fix the root cause before replacing an expensive converter.
