Tire load index chart
The load index is the number before the speed rating at the end of a tire size. It is the most each tire can carry: 91 is 1,356 lb, 94 is 1,477 lb, 100 is 1,764 lb, 102 is 1,874 lb and 112 is 2,469 lb. The full chart from 60 to 150 is below.

SL, XL and LT tires
Most passenger tires are standard load (SL, often not marked). An XL (extra load) tire carries its higher load index only when inflated to the higher pressure printed on its sidewall. Light truck tires can show two numbers, such as 126/123: the first is the load for a single tire, the second for each tire of a dual pair. Whatever the tires can carry, the limit that counts is the vehicle's own rating on the door placard.
Decode a whole size with the tire size calculator, or see the speed rating chart.
Keep the new tires at the right pressure
The pressure to run is on the placard in the driver's door jamb, not the maximum printed on the tire. Check it cold, once a month.

Frequently asked
What does the load index on a tire mean?
It is the number just before the speed rating at the end of the size, such as 102 in 225/65R17 102H. It stands for the most weight one tire can carry at its maximum pressure: 102 means 1,874 lb (850 kg).
What is load index 91 in pounds?
Load index 91 is 1,356 lb (615 kg) per tire. Load index 94 is 1,477 lb, 98 is 1,653 lb and 100 is 1,764 lb.
Can I use a tire with a higher load index?
Yes. A higher load index than the one on your door placard is fine. A lower one is not, because the tires would be rated for less weight than the car can carry.
What does 126/123 mean on an LT tire?
Light truck tires can show two load indexes. The first is for a tire used on its own (126 = 3,748 lb), the second for each tire of a dual pair on the same side of an axle (123 = 3,417 lb).
Kilograms are the standard values, each checked against two sources: Wikipedia: Tire code (load index and speed rating tables, citing ETRTO); Tyreteam: load index and speed category tables (kg, km/h). Pounds are converted from kilograms and rounded. A few US charts, such as Pirelli's, print different pound figures for 66 (639 lb instead of 661), 131 (4,289 lb instead of 4,299) and 148 (6,844 lb instead of 6,945); the kilogram value is the reference.
